Squarespace Hosting Basics

What does it mean to host a website?

Hosting your website means making it accessible via World Wide Web.

A web hosting provides the physical space where you can store or display your website’s content - for example, your website images or videos. So it’s basically where your website lives!

How does Squarespace Hosting work?

Squarespace acts as all in one platform when it comes to hosting your website. It provides:

  • SSL Certification

  • Free Domains

  • Your website’s security

  • Unlimited Hosting Plans with no limits on your site’s bandwidth and storage

Let’s take a closer look at each of these aspects.

Domain Host: the address of your website. It is what someone types into their browser to access your website’s content.

When you make a website with Squarespace, a built-in domain is assigned to you automatically.

Squarespace also provides you with the opportunity to register custom domains or transfer domains to your Squarespace if you’ve bought it from a third party provider. So if you already have a domain that you’ve purchased for your website, you can move that across to Squarespace.

Web Host : This is the company that provides space for your website and ‘owns’ your website’s data.

For example, when you make a website with Squarespace , your web host is Squarespace. If you’re not using Squarespace, you might use a third-party option such as Siteground.

A web host provides all the services and technologies that you need for your website to run via world wide web.

SSL Certification : SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. To improve your website’s security and performance, Squarespace automatically protects your website’s domain via SSL. SSL protects your data and ensures better server-client communication.

How does Squarespace Set-up Compared To Wordpress?

Compared to Wordpress, Squarespace is dead simple. You can set up a website in just minutes!

Head to Squarespace.com, pick a theme, and boom: you’ve got a sub domain and have built a vast majority of your website. You can edit your theme, add your desired content images , videos whenever you want.

On the other hand, Wordpress is a pain to set up if you’re not a tech geek. First you have to download it, then you have to upload and install it on your server. After that, you have to connect it with a database like MYSQL and only then you are ready to build a website.

This entire process is very cumbersome and takes a whole tonne of your time and energy.

For a more in-depth comparison of the two platforms and why I think Squarespace is ideal for health practitioners, check out my previous blog here.

Squarespace brings all of the ease of the drag-and-drop website builders such as Wix. But it also has improved SEO, functionality and more that puts it in the same league as Wordpress. That’s why it’s my go-to website platform.
