Scientific literacy
Step One: Review the SLI requirements and learning outcomes
Science literacy and why it is important
Researchers often make a distinction between scientific cognition and scientific literacy; scientific cognition involves multiple components and sub-components and more than just remembering specific scientific facts (Feist 2006). Deanna Kuhn argues that the primary factor involved with scientific thinking is coordinating belief with evidence (2011). Scientific cognition involves understanding the basics of the philosophy of science, knowledge of research methods, probabilistic reasoning, and applying logic (inductive and deductive). Civic Scientific Literacy Science literacy is the understanding and knowledge of science. Before he passed, Stephen Hawking wrote that the survival of the human species will depend on future scientists because he believed the only way humans will avoid extinction is by colonizing space.

Science literacy definition
These excellent research-to-practice materials can only help if we actually use them. Commit to building a learning community around one or more of these materials, beginning by downloading and reading as a group. Then discuss, try things with students, reflect, and repeat. This is how the science of reading matters, and how it works: by helping all our kids to become empowered and thoughtful readers. What is Climate Science Literacy?
